For those of you who may be interested in helping out the homeless population in San Diego, but aren't sure how, I belong to the organization, Friends of Homeless Veterans. Our sole purpose is to support the homeless veteran population in and around San Diego with food, clothing, and other essential needs. We have various fundraisers throughout the year during which we raise funds to purchase clothing and other basic needs the homeless veterans may need. Our main fundraiser/clothing donation drive is a "Sock Hop" that occurs in November, usually Thanksgiving weekend, at The Ould Sod, 3373 Adams Ave, San Diego, CA 92116. At this event, various local musical artists perform, and we have an auction and some raffles. Admission to this event is a package of new socks or underwear. All clothing and monetary donations are also accepted. With these donations of socks, underwear and monies, our organization puts together Christmas packages for the men at the homeless veterans' shelter in Point Loma to distribute to them on Christmas Eve, along with more food that imaginable donated by many of the Trader Joe's in San Diego county. This past year, we were also able to purchase new jeans, button down shirts, t-shirts, belts, shoes, and other clothing for the men to take with them when the shelter closed in April for the summer. If you are at all interested in supporting our organization, please visit us at www.friendsofhomelessveterans.org, or find us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/edit/?i.... Our next fundraiser is a Pub Quiz scheduled for September 29, 2010 at The Ould Sod, 3373 Adams Ave, San Diego, CA 92116. It's amazing what something as simple as a pair of socks or underwear can do to make a man feel that much better about himself.
