I believe that NPs should be legally allowed to practice independently of physicians in California...some of the best primary care providers I've had have been NPs. As for the difference in the amount of education, the gap between NPs and physicians is closing with the current push to increase NP education to a doctorate level. Sure, there may be some complicated cases of that go beyond the scope of practice of a nurse practitioner, but in those cases they can do what most primary care physicians would do when faced with a case that goes beyond their skill level: refer the client to someone who can help. But in the vast majority of cases, NPs can do the job, and do it well!
