Teen Critic: 'Zero Dark Thirty'

Really nicely done, Robert. I appreciate the honest and balanced and thoughtful insights you had about this film. You're more articulate than many adults I encounter in the world!

I'm still on the fence about this film and if I'll ever see it, but I've enjoyed your reasoned and well-expressed reaction, and the fact that you had the courage to share it. Also, kudos to you for wanting more backstory and character development and depth in action films. I hope you keep that and continue to articulate it. Storytelling always feels better to me when I know the characters.

Jazz Avenue In Germany

Thanks for highlighting some of the amazing things music in school can do. These kids rock. Or jam? I don't know the right word. :)

Cash Mob Returns To San Diego

It's such an honor to be a part of a wonderful movement. Hope to see lots of people tonight at Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town. On Juan St, between Wallace and Mason!

Thanks for taking the time to support this movement!

Review: 'Sucker Punch'

Yes. This movie is awful. Terrible. Painful. Vile.

I was really looking forward to a dumb, fun movie filled with hot girls in almost no clothes kicking ass.

That is not this movie. I realized I couldn't even explain what the movie was supposed to be to people when I was talking about it. One of my friends said, "did you even watch it?" when I was describing the, for sake of argument, let's call it a "plot".

Thank you for helping to protect the world from the crime that is this movie.

Rants and Raves: Films to be Thankful For

I'm thankful for Genghis Blues that combines so many of my favorite elements: weird music; fat men on tiny horses; grand adventure; heartbreak; old men drinking strange vodka; richard feynman; strange, friendly, adventurous people having lots of fun.

I'm thankful for any movie that has a spunky child showing wisdom beyond their years (bonus points for foreign language): The Bicycle Thief, The Cave of the Yellow Dog, Cinema Paradiso.

I'm thankful for any movie that makes me think, laugh, cry, cringe, shout, groan, or otherwise have an emotional response. I'm thankful for the people who put their blood, sweat and tears into my favorite form of story telling, and I'm thankful for the people who share thoughtful criticism, insight, and passion for film (like, for instance, you, Beth... And you, people who read Beth's column).

Rants and Raves: Harry Potter Fans

The crowd at the Mission Valley AMC was nearly as fun as the film itself. There was a Hagrid wandering around getting hugs and taking pictures. A girl with a beautiful and ornate Luna Lovegood headdress. And wizards and Hogwarts students and muggles galore. Everyone was so happy and excited.

Watching a movie with a group of people who just love it so intensely they want to cry (and stay, shockingly, nearly silent throughout the entire 2.5 hour run time) is one of my favorite experiences.

Having to go to work on 3 hours of sleep after, not so much.
