USS Midway Veterans Recall Fall of Saigon

I just wanted to say that Maureen Cavanaugh did a beautiful job of interviewing Admiral Lawrence Chambers and Commander Vern Jumper who shared their memories on board the USS Midway. They have much to be proud of. It sounds as though they ran a near-perfect operation, inspiring their troops to work together to help all those poor displaced people and make them as comfortable as possible.

The pride and the sorrow both touched me to tears.

Thank you,

Calif. Lawmakers Debate Ways to Reduce Prison Population

I know of one way to reduce the population in the prisons: Stop sending back all the mentally ill people who never go to see their parole officers. It's a merry-go-round for a bad reason. I'm basically talking about people whose crime had nothing to do with other people, non-harmful prisoners. Many of those people have only committed the crime of having drugs with them or selling small amounts to their friends or acquaintances. I'm not advocating the use of most drugs but those people are usually harmless - they are put in the lowest security section of the prisons. The prison people know they are harmless. Of course they will have to be assessed one by one. I don't know how many there are in that category but I'm guessing there are many. Also, legalize marijuana. There must be thousands of people in prison, taking up space when they could be adding to the community by paying pot taxes! There is much less violence caused by marijuana than there is caused by alcohol. Just look at Woodstock: 1/4 to 1/2 a million people and NO FIGHTS! Imagine that many people together in the rain and mud drinking alcohol!!!. . . ?

And get rid of that three strikes law! It is unbalanced and often cruel.
