San Diego County Turnout Just 20 Percent

I'm not sure if it's voter fatigue. My perception (as someone who usually votes but didn't even know there were elections this month) is that going to the polls in June is not exactly compelling.

I thought about voting yesterday after hearing about it on the radio. But then I couldn't bring myself to it because I had no idea what was on the ballot.

Consensus Builds For Universal HIV Testing

So public health experts think that everyone on the planet should get tested for HIV. What else is new?

How's that top down mentality working for you in other avenues, Mr. Public Health Expert?

Why not continue to target people who are at risk? Why this change? And why isn't this piece asking these questions? Seems like they just published a presser.

San Diegan Hopes To Make Farmers Markets Go-To Place For Food

Our family buys the vast majority of our fresh produce at local farmers markets. My hope is that the city/state keep their fat little grubby hands out of it as much as possible.

And we adore Jackie's Jams. Fantastic product and a great local small business.

Del Mar Gun Show Draws Record Crowd

I'm all for free flow of commerce. But it's time to regulate the transmission of ammunition and guns, the way we do prescription drugs.

Gun manufacturers are making money hand over fist by simply scaring people.

Police Hand Out 328 Tickets To Pedestrians Thursday

Absolutely ridiculous. As I shared on the related article, this is part of the same pattern I observed downtown since fall 2011. Today it was jaywalking, tomorrow it'll be $100 tickets for not curbing your tires on Kettener, next week it'll be something else. If the city wants to raise revenue they should put forward a new tax instead of issuing tickets for such things.

This small business owner now happily works from home, thereby avoiding a ticket for not putting in all of my quarters in the meter with the head facing to the left.

Pedestrians Targeted In San Diego Police Sweep

Thanks for the update, @claire.

Stories like this aren't good for the city. Hopefully, someone will make a call to the police chief and focus more on other violations rather than ticketing people on their lunch breaks.

Pedestrians Targeted In San Diego Police Sweep

This is about revenue, pure and simple. Last year, they terrorized people with $50 tickets for not "curbing wheels" on any sort of incline all over downtown. People who didn't even park on hills were ticketed.

In 2012, I paid several hundred dollars in parking tickets in east village for 2 hour parking violations, even though I moved my car every 90 minutes and kept careful documentation after I got my first ticket. I was told that written documentation verified by photos I took on my phone with date & GPS stamps were not sufficient evidence to fight the tickets. When pressed, I was told that the tickets had to be paid because the tickets had been issued and nothing I submitted as evidence would overturn the fines. When I questioned the person writing tickets I was told that cars with chalk on their tires were violators, regardless of when they moved.... um, that's not what the signs say.

At the end of 2012, I moved my business out of downtown. Done with their silly revenue games. Why not just raise my taxes? At least I can write that off.

What Happens If You Don't Cooperate At Inland Check Points?

Thanks for posting this. Certainly lots to think about. I find it interesting that the length of a personal violation of privacy is seen as prudent and acceptable by the courts.

Is this like the TSA? It just makes travelers feel safe when, in fact, it is doing little?
