As an early supporter of the Science Festival and a Nifty Fifty speaker, I think we need more people like Larry Bock whose vision pushes the envelope. I think that this is also a case study in bureaucracy. We are building layer upon layer of rules and regulations, applied by people who can say no, but few who can say yes.
It seems we've replaced the "Can Do" attitude that thrived during the Apollo era with a "Better Not" attitude today.
Many of the successful scientists and engineers I've met speak of some seminal introduction to science that sparked their life-long interest. We won't know what sparks have been created by today's festivals for decades, but I think we owe it to the kids of today to provide those sparks.
I hope that we can pull together enough community support to maintain a thriving San Diego science festival under Biocom.
