I went to the same conservatory as such dynamic soloists as Lang Lang, Leila Josefowicz, Hilary Hahn and others. I was definitely taught to emote, it is one of the core principles of instrumental playing. One is taught and repeatedly told to EXAGGERATE things such as dynamics and phrasing so that they are heard clearly by- as most teachers would say "the person in the very last row of the hall!"
Movement was never discouraged. If a player in conservatory moved when they played, that was their choice and their style.
