Joe Hill On His New Book 'NOS4A2'

Ok, really, he didn't need to do that reading during the lunch hour. That was disgusting.

Blackout Leaves Us Still Vulnerable

Ed just mentioned that there are incentives that can encourage people to get solar, if its appropriate for their homes. I think its important to note though, that my understanding is that these incentives are unrelated to getting your own home "off the grid", like the home in the Carribean that he mentioned. These incentives are for solar systems that allow you to sell the energy you generate back to the utility, which doesn't really help you get off the grid at all, you're essentially just feeding the grid. I would LOVE to see some real incentives to get individual homes off the grid. That would be amazing.

Safe Sex Messages Seem To Be Falling Short

It takes two seconds to stop and put on a condom. Uninterrupted enjoyment of the heat of passion is not worth a lifetime of dealing with an STD or an unintended pregnancy. Its worth it to take the extra seconds to wrap it up. Responsibility is so much sexier than not caring whether you pass on a disease or get knocked up (or knock someone up).

Should The City Pay For The Spreckels Pavilion Organist?

I seriously can't believe the City of San Diego is forced to consider eliminating so many of the things that make San Diego a great place to live and to visit.
Those Sunday organ concerts are a huge draw for Balboa Park. People pack that organ pavilion, and then when its over they go eat at the tea house or Prado and visit the museums. Obviously they should keep the organist, and keep the concerts. And while we're at it we should put the fire pits back on the beaches, put back the maintenance schedules that were cut for park bathrooms, and ask San Diego residents to start paying for the services they recieve.

Review: 'Sucker Punch'

I didn't have any interest in making a night out of seeing Sucker Punch anyway, but now I know I don't even need to bother burying it in my Netflix queue.

PS - I felt this way about Black Swan.

Convicted Sex Offenders Petition For Changes To Jessica's Law

Perhaps the "plight" of sex offenders who find themselves homeless because of Jessica's should be a lesson to aspiring sex offenders. The easy solution is to not be a sex offender. I have no pity.

Film Club Of The Air: 'Biutiful,' 'Marwencol,' 'The Illusionist,' 'Inspector Bellamy'

The difference in tone between Anders' and Scott's responses to my comment perfectly illustrate what I'm talking about. One expresses opinion in an intellegent manner that encourages me to keep reading; while the other expresses negativity and a superiority complex that encourages me to roll my eyes. Its perfectly fine to be less than impressed with the nominees. I haven't been wowed by an Oscar nominee since There Will Be Blood, which was just beautiful visually and sonically, and personally I'd LOVE to see more foreign films and documentaries in the mix in general.Come to think of it, now that we have ten Best Picture nominees, why not just get rid of the Best Foreign Film and Best Documentary catagories so that there isn't the forced seperation?

All I'm saying is that there doesn't need to be so much negativity. Rather than spending so much time bashing the mainstream, focus on raving about the lesser known movies you love. Maybe more people will be encouraged to seek out the good.

Film Club Of The Air: 'Biutiful,' 'Marwencol,' 'The Illusionist,' 'Inspector Bellamy'

Why is it that every year (not to mention every week) these film critics are "underwhelmed" and claim the Oscar nominees are "not interesting" and "not best picture material"? I would love to hear some film critics that have something new and interesting to say. Sure, maybe it was a weak year for film, but the constant negativity that streams from Beth Accomondo and Scott Marks wears on my nerves. It seems that every year is a weak year according to them. We get it, the nominees aren't obscure enough for you.

What Can Be Done To Reduce Feral Cat Population?

Yeah, I have a huge problem with the idea of feeding stray or feral cats I'm not sure why they aren't treated the same way skunks, raccoons, etc. are treated... i.e. as pests.
