First I applaud Matt's efforts to put some real numbers and facts out there. Second, I would like to illuminate some thoughts about prison pay for nurses. I have worked with several nurses who formerly worked in prisons. By and large they didn't like living where the prisons were located: Most large prisons are in undesirable areas of the state. They didn't like being shouted and leered at. The pay was good but actually not as good as what they are now making in the private sector, even with benefits accounted for. I have considered working in the prison system and decided against it myself after looking at all the factors. There is a reason that prison nursing jobs have to be farmed out to (expensive) staffing companies: For the most part, people either don't want the jobs or they leave the jobs after short stints. That's simple supply and demand.
