San Diego To Consider Banning Dog, Cat Sales At Retail Stores

I would be one of the first people to call for shutting down a business that was working unethically. If we had pet stores that were mistreating animals, selling animals from puppy mills and all sorts of other abuse I would be in favor of this city legislation. But my question is, "If we only have one live pet store and this person is operating ethically do we need to shut down this one business?" All of my cats over the years have either come from shelters or were otherwise unwanted. All have been spayed/neutered. I am certainly not an anti-tax, anti-government type of person but is legislation needed if it isn't going to be of some use?

UC San Diego To Go Smoke Free

I am totally for a tobacco ban on campus. The UC campus looks like an ash tray. There are ash trays spread through out campus but smokers will still drop their butts and their packages anywhere they want. I also recently saw a smoker grind out a butt on the side of a building leaving a black spot. I also shouldn't have to walk out of my way to avoid second hand smoke. Put plenty of signage on campus and then enforce the regulations to the degree that the extra enforcement will pay for itself.

Manchester's Foray Into Journalism Elicits Praise And Worry

In recent news articles I saw that Manchester is planning on buying the Tribune Corporation. That includes the Chicago Tribune, numerous other papers, but for our region, that means the LA Times. I have sent a letter of complaint to our senators. I have asked them to investigate this based on one organization becoming too much of a monopoly. If you are concerned that a rich businessman wants to dominate Southern California then we need to stop Manchester.

Manchester's Foray Into Journalism Elicits Praise And Worry

Thanks nosramat for your article. It is nice to hear news of this travesty from the inside. It would be nice if KPBS did more clandestine research to see how newspaper journalism has suffered in our city. I also dropped my subscription but I have to admit that I am suffering from daily withdrawl. Papa AH (figure this out for yourself) says that subscriptions are up but I doubt that. I have lived in conservative areas most of my life and I have accepted the fact that the editorial page would not reflect my views. However, now opinions are on the front page. Even though Manchester thinks that the wall between journalism and opinion has not been crossed that is a total lie. In one example there was a front page article on how Obama is to blame for high gas prices and then a few days later Crook Hedgecock basically repeated the article. I found a video from Fox news, during the Bush days, that refuted that the president has the ability to affect gas prices. Conservative opinions change based on the administration.

Broadcasting Pioneer Gloria Penner Dies At 81

For those of us who love PBS and especially KPBS this is the loss of a friend. How many of us remember the iconic Susan Stamberg's cranberry relish or Carl Kasell's iconic voice. I can hear Gloria's voice now. I loved it when she would hold an interviewee's feet to the fire when her show was on during my morning time commute. I had many stuck in the car moments (or are they called KPBS moments) listening to Gloria.
