University Cuts Could Wound San Diego Economy

What cuts? What layoffs? The only major consequence so far is consolidating the libraries. That's mostly a shell game. The upkeep for the spaces will come off the libraries' budget and onto some other department's.

There are not even whispers of furloughs. On the contrary, nonrepresented employees are getting 3% raises. And many represented staff are getting similar raises, too, depending on their contracts. Fancy LEED buildings are going up everywhere.

They say tuition increases only partly covered the shortfall but the money must be coming from somewhere.

"Tthis is happening at a time when other universities are coming and raiding our faculty,” said Suresh Subramani.

When does that not happen? Is there a time when other universities don't want to hire our faculty?
