Hi, Joanne, good interview.
I notice you asked Nathan about his father, who went to college, and the candidate explained why he nevertheless thought he was the first in his family to go to college.
But I don't see any indication here that you asked about his grandfather, who graduated from Berkeley in 1937, or his mom, who attended Nathan's alma mater California Baptist for a semester.
The key question here is, when did Nathan learn that all these relatives had gone to college? I understand that people can have strained family relations. But he is close to his mom (there she is on camera with him). Also, we know the college careers were highlighted in the Reader in spring 2012. Did he read that story?
Nathan was on KPBS just last month saying he was the first in his family to go to college. For me anyway, this raises the question of when he was aware of the others who had gone. Nathan has declined repeatedly to answer this question for us (today, again). So I was hoping maybe you asked him.
