The African-American Railroad Experience

Thank-you Dr. Kornweibel and how refreshing!
I definitely want to research my grandfather's career. The only reminder I have is a coin (faded) given to me by my father and mother that was awarded to my grandfather covering 38 years of service to the Southern Railway (SOU) from 1879-1917. I always wondered what life was for him working for the railroads. Please let me know how I can start such research. Looking forward to your June 22, 2010 San Diego pressentation at the SD Railroad Museum!

The African-American Railroad Experience

So glad I came across this! I'm the grandson of a slave who worked for the Southern Railway (SOU) in South Carolina after emancipation into the early 1900's. I have a coin passed down to me indicating his years of service. My father, in turn, worked for over 30 years with the New York City Transit Authority after serving in the segregated army in WWII. This book sounds like a great resource and reminder of persistent, vibrant, every day African-American families, communities and individuals in the development of our nation!
