In response to the caller reporting abnormal behavior of his cats for roughly 20 hours preceeding the quake, I would direct people to Rupert Sheldrake, "The Sense of Being Stared At," p. 226-29 for a short scientific discussion of this phenomenon. Sheldrake is a biochemist who earned the ire of his scientific community by turning his attention to parapsychology and other psychic researches. Unfortunately, his discussion is limited mostly to anecdotal evidence (it is difficult to develop standardized research protocol for earthquake-related phenonmena), but I hope it will be a helpful start to those who are interested.
