Review: 'A Woman, a Gun, and a Noodle Shop'

You're right about the color interpretation, I had read that the would-be suitor in pink is a hugely popular comedian already best known for playing broadly effeminate caricatures.

Review: 'Machete'

Good point about the reverse typecasting, and nice Billy Jack reference!

New on DVD: 'Harry Brown,' 'Red Riding,' and More

I saw 9th Company unsubbed a few years ago, and it looked very good even so. The director recently adapted the Strugatsky brothers' Inhabited Island, whose Roadside Picnic influenced Tarkovsky's Stalker. But reviews on it sounded mixed at best, like it might be closer in tone to the video game adaptation of Stalker than the film.

Film Club: 'Kick-Ass'

If we dismiss films from serious criticism because of their popular and violent source material, we should also ignore much classic Horror, Giallo, Noir, and Westerns, early work of Fritz Lang and Louis Feuillade, Serials and Silents. One should not lose all perspective simply because it is contemporary.

Review: 'Kick-Ass'

Nice way of pointing out the critical emphasis on social media, voyeurism and apathy in the movie - probably an alternate way to get across the point of the comic, but with less graphic violence involving child characters.

Alice In Wonderland

“Dreamchild”, thanks! That's what I was trying to remember after seeing this.

The Best and Worst of 2009

Great picks! I also liked Terry Crews' rendition of Pinocchio's, "I've Got No Strings" in Gamer. Golden classics at their most menacing.

Broadcast Film Critics Association Announces Nominations

I just hope that "Nine" does not win for the Best Song category.
