I would like to reiterate a comment related by a caller. Pressure Cooker. I got mine in the late '70s and only rediscovered its value in the last few years. Best investment I ever made. Tastier food, MUCH faster cooking & less energy used. Lots of recipes are available on line. Extra: teaches your kids (and yourself) some basic physics and chemistry.
Also: The book "How to Cook a Wolf" by M.F.K. Fisher, written in wartime. Fabulous prose discussing how to both conserve as well as how to thrive and aspire to a better existence in tough times, both culinary and otherwise.
