This was a staged performance designed for the SealCam in an effort to get the beach closed and solicit more money from gullible donors who value emotion and sentimentality over science. The Wans of Malibu and their pseudo-scientific and eponymous "conservancy" are only in this for the profits. Altruism is the farthest thing from their minds.
State law prohibits closing public beach access. Even wealthy beachfront property owners in Malibu have to live with this reality. Filner is pandering to the lowest common intellectual denominator by his illegal action.
Claire, Ironically, the name of the Boulevard is spelled "Clairemont," after developer Claire Burgener. "Claremont" is the college town northeast of LA.
If you want to kill someone in this country and get away with it, make sure your weapon of choice is an automobile and your intended victim is riding a bicycle. If Zegler had killed someone by reckless discharge of a firearm, you can be sure he'd be facing jail time.
Slow down the traffic as far back as Fairmount Avenue. What a waste of time, money, and material! This whole area should be treated as a school zone with one lane in either direction for motor traffic. This is not a freeway, but traffic engineers seem to regard it and Fairmount as extensions of I-8. These are surface streets. High speeds and uncontrolled merges have no place here.
Professor Ryan states correctly that women don't feel safe or comfortable riding in San Diego. I'm a 56 year old man and I don't feel safe or comfortable on local class I bikeways like the Ocean Beach bike path along the San Diego River. Same goes for the Rose Creek bike path in Pacific Beach. Transients have twice attempted strong arm robbery of my bicycle as I rode through in the early morning darkness on my way to work. Riding through their trash and feces strewn camps can be hazardous when dozens of people are hauled out like harbor seals in sleeping bags across the path with no barrier and sharp riprap along the riverbed. Until the political will exists to keep these bike paths clear of this kind of danger, it will continue to discourage cycling commuters of both sexes from using these expensive facilities that the City wants to give away as plein air insane asylums and homeless shelters.
