Video Transcript:
Hello, I’m Joanne Faryon, reporter here at KPBS. For the next several weeks, we're working on an investigation into the food we eat here in San Diego. We'll trace the food from your dinner plate back to the farm, field and ocean. We’ll tell you why your chicken breast looks so much bigger then it did when you were a kid. And we’ll find out whether the oranges you buy at the grocery store came from one of our many groves here in the county or whether it traveled thousands of miles instead. At the end of this series we hope you walk away with the facts you need to make informed choices at the grocery store and farmers market. One more thing. Did you know that we spend half as much on food today then we used to? In fact, a couple generations ago families spent more than 25 percent of their total budgets on food. Today we spend 12 percent of our income on food and nearly half of that is spent in restaurants. You'll see throughout our coverage how that simple fact has dramatically influenced the way we grow and produce food. We'll be reporting back to you during the next several weeks on radio and television. Plus, we'll be asking for your help in our investigation. In the end, we'll bring it all together in a KPBS Envision documentary called "Food." You can follow along at KPBS.org/food.
