About the Film:
Based on a novel by Nick Barkow, “Gloomy Sunday” is a German/Hungarian film co-written and directed by Rolf Schubel in 1999. Set in World War II Hungary, the film centers on a romantic love triangle and the fictional story of the famous song “Gloomy Sunday.” The story begins in a Budapest eatery, Restaurant Szabo where restaurant owner, Laszlo (Joachim Krol), and pianist Andras (Stefano Dionisi), fall in love with Ilona (Erika Marozsan), a waitress at Szabo. The plot thickens when their regular customer Hans (Ben Becker), an SS colonel, begins to pursue Ilona's affections. “Gloomy Sunday” won Best Screenplay by Deutscher Filmpreis in 2000 and Best Director, Best Cinematographer by Bayerischer Filmpreis in 2000.
