Artists @ Work: Large Scale Ceramics By Alex Long

Challenging the traditional scale of ceramics, Alex Long will be throwing a 100lb. ceramic urn on a potter’s wheel that will be approximately 4' to 5' tall and 16" wide at OMA’s Artists@Work on Thursday, April 12, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On the second Thursday of most months, OMA invites you to join us for a creative happy hour from 6 to 9 p.m., and experience our newest exciting program, Artists@Work.

Watch art come to life as artists produce an original artwork live in front of guests. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with a different diverse artist each month, and get a first-hand look at the creative process while enjoying complimentary appetizers by Bull Taco and Harney Sushi and an open beer and wine bar featuring craft beer from Lagunitas Brewing Company.

About the Artist:
Alex’s passion for ceramics began at the age of 13 while growing up in Solana Beach in 1968. By incorporating his immense art pieces and an ancient Japanese form of pottery call Raku, a firing technique customarily applied to small scale ceramics, his immense pieces that can reach 7 ft tall and weight 260 lbs.

A gallery artist from the age of 17, he also creates commissioned Raku tile murals, casts bronze & aluminum sculpture and works with lamp-work glass. Long currently teaching pottery to children at the Boys & Girls Club of Encinitas and also conducts Raku workshops from his home/studio in Olivenhain, California every 3 to 4 months.
