The 21st annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis will bring the San Diego community together on December 13th, 2014 to raise funds to fight and cure arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability. The annual holiday themed event will be held at 6th and Quince Streets in Balboa Park at 8:00 a.m. The Arthritis Foundation expects more than 2,000 participants will take part in Jingle Bell Run/Walk this year.

Voted as one of the nation’s “Most Incredible Themed Races,” the Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis is an important fundraising event designed to raise funds to help find a cure for arthritis, a debilitating disease that affects over 412,000 adults and 6,000 children in the San Diego community. Contrary to popular belief, arthritis strikes people of all ages, not just the elderly. In fact, two-thirds of the 53 million Americans with arthritis are under the age of 65, including over 300,000 children. In particular, juvenile arthritis can be especially painful for children.

Zane Breier, 13, San Diego’s 2014 Jingle Bell Run/Walk Youth Honoree, was diagnosed at age 11 with a form of arthritis known as Scleroderma. This disease causes an overactive immune system that aggressively attacks one’s own cells. The Arthritis Foundation’s juvenile arthritis programs gave Zane the opportunity to meet other children affected by arthritis, and helped him realize he was not alone. Programs, like the Joint Adventure Camp, allowed Zane to feel more comfortable with his daily medications. He felt that camp was a big turning point for him in accepting his “new normal” and decided he was ready to let people know about his condition. As Zane says, “If they don’t know about it (arthritis), then how can they help us find a cure?” Zane’s has made the Jingle Bell Run/Walk his personal mission to help raise awareness about the disease through the Jungle Bell Run/Walk.

As the nation’s largest holiday race series, the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis event offers a 5K timed fun run and a 1K walk with other fun activities for the entire family. Participants, including pets, are invited to dress in holiday attire to add to the festivities!
