What better way to honor Herman Melville's birthday than with a reading of his classic seafaring novel, "Moby Dick?"

Write Out Loud puts on a birthday bash in which the community is invited to read aloud from the book - whether it's one sentence, a few pages or however much can be recited in five minutes.

The reading begins aboard the Star of India at noon Saturday, Aug. 1 and continues nonstop until 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2 (or until complete). Each person will have five minutes to read (if there's no one in line, you can read longer).

Sign-up opens at 11 a.m. on the ship's ramp, but volunteers may not make specific requests for particular passages. Along with public readers, there will also be local actors and various celebrity readers throughout the day.

For those planning to stay the entire time, there will be a 10-minute break every three hours and there will be drinks and snacks available for purchase.

For additional details call (619) 297-8953.
