FILM FORUM: ‘Web Junkie’ (POV Film And Discussion)

The San Diego Central Library, POV and the Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center present "Web Junkie," a chilling glimpse into the Chinese government’s attempt to reprogram it’s “Internet-addicted” youth. The documentary chronicles a nation in flux as technology, wealth and autonomy are altering the ties between the young and their elders.

Official selection of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. 2014. 80 minutes. (PG-13). A discussion will be lead by Teresa Whitney after the film. Free admission. 2 hours free parking with validation.

Teresa Whitney is the program manager of the Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center. She is also an adjunct professor at San Diego City College where she teaches in the Behavioral Sciences Alcohol and Other Drug Studies Certification Program. For over 100 years The Salvation Army’s ARC program has provided spiritual, social, and emotional assistance for men and women who have lost the ability to cope with their problems and provide for themselves. The ARC program is made possible through the generosity of those who donate goods that can be sold in Salvation Army family thrift stores.

POV (“point of view”) is the longest-running showcase on television for independent nonfiction films, featuring 14-16 of the most innovative documentaries every year on PBS. POV films are known for their intimacy, unforgettable storytelling and timeliness, putting a human face on contemporary social issues.
