More Than History And Dates: Black Civil War Re-Enactors Re-Enact Freedom

Professor Patricia Davis of Georgia State University discusses the little known world of African American Civil War re-enactors. Black re-enactors were unheard of 50 years ago during the Civil War centennial. But the story of the re-enactors has emerged in the past 20 years thanks to new scholarship on Black Civil War troops, the 1989 movie “Glory” which tells the story of the all black 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and Ken Burns’ PBS documentary on the Civil War.
