THIS EVENT IS IN THE PAST!
The San Diego Foundation today announced a donation of 100 new drought-resistant, California-friendly trees to commemorate its 40th anniversary of philanthropic leadership in the San Diego region.
The $50,000 grant award was made to the Balboa Park Conservancy in honor of the Park’s 2015 centennial. The City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department will steward tree planting and maintenance.
On Tuesday, November 3 at 11:00am, volunteers who are passionate about Balboa Park and San Diego’s rich natural and cultural resources will plant the first 47 of 100 trees near the Sixth Avenue Playground area of Balboa Park located along Balboa Drive near the corner of 6th Avenue and Quince Street.
Tomas Herrera-Mishler, Director of the Balboa Park Conservancy, stated that The San Diego Foundation’s donation of 100 smart trees will be well received and cared for.
“The mission of the Conservancy,” said Herrera-Mishler, “is to keep Balboa Park magnificent by sustaining and enhancing its beauty and its historic, cultural and recreational character for the enduring enjoyment of all. These beautiful, drought-resistant trees from The San Diego Foundation allow for a greater diversification of our park forest,” said Herrera-Mishler. “We’re fully prepared with a sophisticated water-conserving irrigation system in place to assure that the trees thrive even under the most severe drought conditions.”
The drought-resistant trees donated by The Foundation were raised on-site in a nursery at Balboa Park, and consist of a variety of pines, including San Diego’s unique Torrey Pine, as well as olive, oak, cedar, cypress and palm trees. Over the next year, the trees will be planted at Balboa Park’s Campfire USA Entrance, the Trees for Health Garden, the Nutmeg Street Restroom area and Sixth Avenue Playground.
Community members interested in volunteering for the tree planting event on November 3 can contact email@example.com for more information.
