During her year-long Creative Catalyst project called 'Paper Pattern Story', artist Bhavna Mehta collected patterns and stories from the community as inspiration for a cut paper installation in the intimate Parker Gallery.

Through 24 local community workshops conceived and conducted by Mehta, class participants made drawings and cut paper using patterns from their daily lives. As the workshops progressed conversations sparked new ideas, friendships flourished between the participants, and colorful, decorative, abstract designs filled journal pages. A wealth of artwork was collected and scanned, creating a database that would become the engine to tell a story.

Gush refers to ideas flowing out in a rapid stream, and the effusiveness of goodwill and enthusiasm that was shown by all of the participants in the project.

In Mehta’s installation, line, color, and shadow fill up the gallery space with patterns that float and flutter in a world of stories upon stories. The timeless tale of art bringing people together combines with a narrative of immersion in the wild and fragile land of the imagination.

The Paper Pattern Story project was funded by a grant from the Creative Catalyst Fund of The San Diego Foundation.
