Sign Language Basics and Deaf Culture with Amanda Sortwell and Bethany Souza.

Do you have a unique appreciation for the art of talking with your hands? Have you ever met a deaf person and didn't know how to communicate with them? Are you curious to learn more about a little-known sector of our society? If so, please join us for an evening exploring the world of Deaf Culture! We will discuss the differences between hearing and deaf culture, identify facets of this rich culture nestled within our society, and provide a basic introduction to American Sign Language.

Amanda Sortwell has a passion in promoting Early Intervention services for deaf children and deaf Interpreting in Mental Health. She is deaf and was exposed to American Sign Language (ASL) at birth from her parents and grandparents. Amanda has a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and is training for certification in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She also volunteers as a Crisis Text Line Counselor for the D/HH community. Bethany Souza was first exposed to ASL in 4th grade when there was a deaf girl in her classroom. It started a lifelong fascination with ASL and Deaf Culture. Recently, Bethany worked at a deaf at-risk youth group home for 2.5 years and is currently pursuing a Certificate in ASL Interpreting at Mesa College.
