Produced by Proyecto ACCESO at California Western School of Law, “Traditional Knowledge – Mapuche Medicine Meets Modernity,” has been selected by the San Diego Latino Film Festival to make its worldwide premiere on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the AMC Fashion Valley Cinemas.

Created by Sebastian Vives del Solar, a Chilean with nearly 20 years of experience in broadcasting production, and James Cooper, Associate Professor of Law and Director of International Legal Studies at California Western, the documentary presents the traditional knowledge and ancestral wisdom of the Mapuche, the largest indigenous group in Chile, medicine.

The purpose of the documentary is to show the quiet innovation that is occurring in Santiago and generally in southern Chile where the Mapuche original health systems are increasingly gaining ground within the traditional health care system. For the project, the producers received the sponsorship of the Chilean regional office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) through the Ministry of Education of Chile and the National Indigenous Development Corporation.

California Western School of Law has been working with indigenous peoples in Latin America for close to two decades. Faculty members and students have worked with the indigenous unit of the Public Defender’s Office of Chile, advised the President’s Office of Bolivia on traditional justice mechanisms, and undertaken research on protecting indigenous innovations in the global intellectual property regime.
