Ion Theatre Company stages "Cabaret," a musical theater classic with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Joe Masterhoff.

The local production is directed by Claudio Raygoza, with musical direction by Morgan Carberry and choreography by Michael Mizerany.

Set in 1930s Berlin, "Cabaret" centers around struggling American writer Clifford Bradshaw. On his first night in town, Cliff wanders into the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy nightclub overseen by the strange, omniscient and gender-bending Master of Ceremonies, The Emcee. Here, Cliff meets Sally Bowles, a vivacious cabaret performer with whom he begins a relationship, which blossoms into a dream-like romance. The inexorable drumbeat of war grows louder as Berlin morphs from exciting and vital to ominous and violent. Eventually Cliff, Sally and their contemporaries are swept up in the chaos as the continent marches inevitably toward a dangerous social and political precipice.

(Super) Short Review: Walking into Ion's tiny theater space, it really does feel like you're entering the world of "Cabaret's" Kit Kat Club. Set in Berlin just as the Nazis are rising to power, this already powerful story feels more desperate and terrifying when performed almost interactively with the audience. The local production is packed with talent, including Linda Libby as the Emcee. The addition of a second Emcee brings a new level to this iconic musical, including a commentary on today's political climate. If you can get tickets, make time in your busy holiay schedule to see it.
