San Diego Opera presents "As One," a multimedia performance as part of its Detour series.

Outwardly, Young Hannah is like every other "good boy." But inside, she knows there are things she must hide just to survive. As she grows, she thinks she will always be alone, an “other” Until she hears the word … the real word, a magic word … and she knows there are others like her. Take the journey with Hannah from a young boy in a small town, through college and finally to Norway, where she finds that she, like the Northern Lights, can be, As One, and be beautiful.

Transgenderism is a word you hear in the news and courts, a hot button topic in current society. "As One" strips the issue bare to one human being’s solitary and emotional journey with empathy and humor and we rediscover that we all want the same things.

Two voices, a baritone and a mezzo-soprano, share the sole protagonist role in a 75-minute intimate chamber opera featuring the Hausmann Quartet. Stay for Act II, a talk-back with the cast and crew. Part of San Diego Opera’s dētour Series.

For tickets or additional details call (619) 533-7000.

KPBS will broadcast the show live on Saturday, November 11 at 7 p.m.
