2019 is the 100th anniversary of the completion of John Spreckels’ San Diego & Arizona Railway construction. The railroad, often dubbed the “Impossible Railroad” because of the challenges to build the route through brutal and hostile mountainous terrain, had a branch line through Santee and was the last link in the southern transcontinental rail network.

Join us for a special presentation by Reena Deutsch, who will discuss the early history of San Diego railroads, and highlights (and lowlights) of the SD&A Railway. Books will be available for purchase.

SPEAKER BIO:
Reena Deutsch has been hiking and exploring the Anza-Borrego desert for over 20 years. In the 1990s, while wandering in the southeastern part of our local desert, she stumbled upon old railroad tracks and her interest became heightened. Since researching the colorful history of John Spreckels’ San Diego & Arizona (Eastern) Railway, she has given dozens of lectures and wrote a book on it. She currently serves as a Board member for the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association and Balboa Park’s San Diego Model Railroad Museum. This year, she is collaborating with the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the completion of the San Diego & Arizona Railway.
