Summer heats up when several artists visit the library to join us for the fourth annual celebration of local artists The Face Behind the Art. This year we will have four celebrated artists visit the library to talk about their lives and their works.

On August 5 at 6 p.m. the library will host Adrián Arancibia. Mr. Arancibia is an author, critic and educator who currently works as a professor of English and Creative Writing at Miramar Community College. A published author and poet, he is also one of the founders of the seminal Chicano/Latino performance poetry collective Taco Shop Poets.

Visiting the library on August 12 at 6 p.m. visual artist James Watts will discuss his works, his life and his artistic process. Mr. Watts is a noted sculptor and mixed media artist who has worked on noted projects exploring mortality (The Bone Project) and heritage (Kokeshi Dolls). His studio is located in Downtown San Diego.

Photographer, painter and activist Cindy Zimmerman will join us on August 19. Her works have been exhibited at the Athenaeum Arts Center, Women’s Museum of California and she currently has an exhibit at the Cooler Room of Art Produce Gallery in North Park. Cindy Zimmerman has taught for the National School District.

On August 26 at 6 p.m, poet and journalist Adolfo Guzman-Lopez will talk about his connections with National City and the role it has played on his works. A reporter on public radio, Mr. Guzman-Lopez has been involved in the arts and education all his life and a plaque commemorating his poem that he wrote for the opening of the National City Library can be seen inside the entrance to the library.

The programs will be hosted by award winning artist and Professor Emeritus in Art, Media and Design Department at CSU San Marcos, David Avalos.

Dates and times of events are subject to change without notice. Always check the event organizer's website for the most updated schedule before attending.
