Join us to read and discuss the 2019 One Book, One San Diego selection, “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai. Everyone is welcome.

“The Great Believers” is a historical novel about the terrors and tragedies of the AIDS epidemic and its repercussions, through a story about friendship and redemption in the face of tragedy and loss, set in 1980s Chicago and contemporary Paris.

It won the Stonewall Book Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and was optioned by Amy Poehler for television.

This discussion will be facilitated by library volunteer, Steven Berstein. After retiring in January of 2001, he kept a New Years resolution to join a book club.

According to Bernstein, "it wasn’t long before I discovered that reading a book without discussing it with others is kind of like eating pancakes without syrup or visiting Paris and ignoring the Eiffel Tower.
I am grateful to all of the bright, thoughtful, respectful, members of my group who bring their varied backgrounds and insights to our discussions."
