Journey Community Church recently celebrated its 25 anniversary. From a humble beginning in the living room of its founding pastor, Journey has conducted services in schools, strip malls and high school football fields, before settling into its permanent location “in between Carl Burger and Dixieline.”

Service is an important part of Journey’s mission – both locally and globally. Following are 6 key areas of Journey’s service:

Journey’s Food Bank has been serving needy families for more than 7 years. Last year (2018) alone, the Bank provided fruits, vegetables and non-perishable items to 5,162 families, 700 seniors, and 531 homeless individuals. The Food Bank holds distributions 4 days each month, serving 100 to 150 families at each. Journey partners with Feeding San Diego, the San Diego Food Bank, and Heavens Windows.

About 7 years ago, a Journey attender had the idea of starting a Thrift Store. Clothing and other items would be sold at (very) reasonable cost, with 100 percent of the profits going to support Journey’s local and global efforts to serve and protect those in need. Twice Treasured Thrift Store has become one of the finest, best run thrift stores in the area.

In May of 2003, 15 (very) young adults, led by one semi-intrepid (older) adult, made their way to downtown San Diego looking for homeless people to serve. Fifteen years later, participants in Hope For The Homeless have been on the streets every Friday night, serving food, making friends, and praying with them. When you hand out 400 PB&Js every Friday night, they start calling you The Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang!

Journey has been active in Carrefour, Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. We have funded the building of a school and health clinic and provide regular support for the clinic. Each summer a team of people from Journey visits Carrefour to conduct a Haitian version of Journey’s Summer Fun Camp. Journey remains strategically active in Haiti through the work of Gabriel’s Promise, a non-profit created and run by a Journey missionary.

Journey Community Church is the primary supporter of H.I.S. Ministries located in a small community just south of Tecate, B.C. H.I.S. provides care and support for children during the day while their parents are at work, primarily making clay pots. Children are provided meals, naps, help with homework and play time. H.I.S. also provides many children with uniforms, a requirement for attending school and a significant financial burden for families in the community.

Twelve years ago, a Journey attender sold and gave away all that she had and bought a one-way ticket to Swaziland. Although she didn’t know what she was getting into at the time, her life has focused around her work as a social worker at Project Canaan, a non-profit ministry that rescues abandoned children. Today, over 190 babies and children under seven years of age call Project Canaan home and a solemn promise has been made to care for them until they complete their High School education.

Each of these areas requires contributions of time and money. Cupid Is Stupid has quickly become a tradition at Journey. A night of clean comedy by professional comedians. All profit from the show will go to support programs like those above.
