Plays By Young Writers 2019

Every year, middle and high school students from around the state participate in the California Young Playwrights Contest.

The top scripts by participants ages 15 to 19 are turned into full productions staged at The Old Globe. Winning playwrights under age 15 will have staged readings of their pieces.

Program A is recommended for ages 11 and over:

Sabre Springs' Naomi Melville (17) with "Trash! The Musical (An Autobiography)": Trash jumps out of the can to find its purpose in this heartwarming musical.

A staged reading of Imperial Beach's Marco Herrera (14) and Chris Johnson (14) with "Just Let Me Help": Financial difficulties are exposed when a father and son go camping.

Program B is recommended for ages 14 and over:

Studio City's Jack Ventimilia (16) with "Sea of Fog": Two outsiders struggle to understand religion in a modern world.

Villa Park's Emma Kuli (18) with "A Mother's Mother": A teen's pregnancy reveals the true bond between mother and daughter.

Staged reading of Rolando's Shyla de Hoop (11) with "Have Hope": Two cats embark on a journey to find their missing mother.

Opening night is 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019 and features all three full productions and a post-show reception.

Program A is staged at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26
Program B is staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 & 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26
