Have you always been interested in exploring San Diego’s back-country? Never been backpacking before, but would love to get out there and explore? Need to brush up on your skills? An experienced hiker or backpacker that would like to explore new areas? The Wilderness Basics Course (WBC) is for you!

WBC takes place once a year starting on Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 6:45 to 9 p.m. for 10 weeks, ending on Tuesday, March 19.

Lecture classes take place on Tuesday nights with topics such as land navigation, fitness conditioning, equipment, clothing and footwear, first aid, back-country cooking, water filtration, flora and fauna, wildlife and more. No matter your level of experience, you'll get to put into practice what you've learned on four weekend outings!

Weekend Outings:
- Car Camp
- Mountain/Desert Backpack
- Land Navigation Backpack
- Snow Camp

WBC was recently recognized with a Special Achievement Award for its dedication in teaching San Diegans on how to be safe and comfortable in the back-country while enjoying, exploring and protecting the planet. Since 1967, over 20,000 people have taken the course. Sponsored by the Sierra Club San Diego, both courses (North County and San Diego) are 10 weeks in duration.

Advanced registration is recommended as the course usually fills up by mid-December and space is capped at 225 students.

Dates and times of events are subject to change without notice. Always check the event organizer's website for the most updated schedule before attending.
