'Crumbs From The Table Of Joy' - San Diego's Fifth Annual Juneteenth Theatrical Celebration

Cultural Noire Performing Arts Company and WorldBeat Cultural Center, in partnership with Project1VOICE, will present a staged reading of Lynn Nottage's classic play, "Crumbs from the Table of Joy."

Theater companies, museums, colleges and universities around the country will unite for this annual theater celebration that revives and re-introduces forgotten classic plays in the American theater.

"Crumbs from the Table of Joy" is a coming-of-age story told through Ernestine Crump. Set in 1950 with the ever-present backdrop of working-class Brooklyn New York, Ernestine’s seventeen-year-old world is turned upside down after her mother dies and her father moves her and her sister from Pensacola to Brooklyn.

This memory play examines racism, feminism and the challenging nature of change.

"Crumbs from the Table of Joy" features Andrea Agosto; Portia Gregory; Anthony Hamm; Lori Jefferson; Bianca Ostojich; and Gina M. Jackson as narrator. The reading is directed by Gina M. Jackson and Portia Gregory.

The theatrical celebration will be held on Monday, June 17 at WorldBeat Cultural Center Balboa Park. Doors open at 6 p.m.; the staged reading begins at 7 p.m.

The staged reading is free.

An art exhibit (WorldBeat Cultural Center is a Smithsonian-affiliated museum) and Cultural Center tour will take place from 6-6:45 p.m.; a reception will follow the staged reading.
