Medical Insights: AIDS/HIV

Dr. Raymond Chinn will speak about his experiences working with AIDS/HIV patients in the '80s as well as the some of the science behind this once deadly disease.

Chinn is the former medical director of infection prevention and clinical epidemiology at Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he practiced for more than 35 years. He earned his undergraduate degree with honors from the Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and his medical degree from the University of Texas in Houston.

He completed his internal medicine residency at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center and infectious disease fellowship at Boston University Medical Center Hospital.

Dr. Chinn is board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease. He is an active participant in the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America and the Infectious Disease Association of California.

He has coauthored national guidelines, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and poster presentations on infection prevention. His clinical interest is in the management of patients with HIV infection as well as recipients of solid organ transplants and mechanical assist devices.

This event is presented as part of One Book, One San Diego, in connection with the 2019 selection, “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai.

“The Great Believers” is a historical novel about the terrors and tragedies of the AIDS epidemic and its repercussions, through a story about friendship and redemption in the face of tragedy and loss, set in 1980s Chicago and contemporary Paris.

It won the Stonewall Book Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and was optioned by Amy Poehler for television.

This event is part of the San Diego Public Library’s programming for this year’s One Book, One San Diego. The 2019 selections include “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai, “The Crossover” by Kwame Alexander for young adults, "Dreamers" by Yuyi Morales for kids, and “Éramos unos niños” by Patti Smith for Spanish-language readers.
