Book Discussion Group: 'The Great Believers' By Rebecca Makkai

Please join us for a book discussion for adults on the 2019 One Book, One San Diego selection, “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai.

“The Great Believers” is a historical novel about the terrors and tragedies of the AIDS epidemic and its repercussions, through a story about friendship and redemption in the face of tragedy and loss, set in 1980s Chicago and contemporary Paris.


It won the Stonewall Book Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and was optioned by Amy Poehler for television.

Brenda Wegener is the Branch Manager at Carmel Valley Branch Library and has been a member of the One Book, One San Diego committee for the past six years. She has served on a number of book prize committees including the ALA Notable Books Committee, the Sargent First Novel Prize and is the San Diego Public Library nominator for the Dublin Literary Award.

This event is part of the San Diego Public Library’s programming for this year’s One Book, One San Diego. The 2019 selections include “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai, “The Crossover” by Kwame Alexander for young adults, "Dreamers" by Yuyi Morales for kids, and “Éramos unos niños” by Patti Smith for Spanish-language readers.
