Join us for a special One Book One San Diego: Halloween Film. Afterwards, we will discuss queer representation in genre films in the 1980s when the AIDS epidemic was first emerging and how queer representation in media has evolved today.

Presented as part of One Book, One San Diego, featuring the 2019 selection, “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai.

“The Great Believers” is a historical novel about the terrors and tragedies of the AIDS epidemic and its repercussions, through a story about friendship and redemption in the face of tragedy and loss, set in 1980s Chicago and contemporary Paris.

It won the Stonewall Book Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and was optioned by Amy Poehler for television.
