'San Diego's Gay Bar History' Documentary & Discussion

"San Diego Gay Bar History" (2018), by filmmaker Paul Detwiler, traces the development of the gay bar as a community institution in San Diego, from post-WWII to the present. Winner of the Audience Award for BEst Documentary at the 2018 FilmOut San Diego LGBT film festival.

Presented as part of One Book, One San Diego, featuring the 2019 selection, “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai.

“The Great Believers” is a historical novel about the terrors and tragedies of the AIDS epidemic and its repercussions, through a story about friendship and redemption in the face of tragedy and loss, set in 1980s Chicago and contemporary Paris.

It won the Stonewall Book Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and was optioned by Amy Poehler for television.

This event is part of the San Diego County Library’s programming for this year’s One Book, One San Diego. The 2019 selections include “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai, “The Crossover” by Kwame Alexander for young adults, "Dreamers" by Yuyi Morales for kids, and “Éramos unos niños” by Patti Smith for Spanish-language readers.
