One Book, One San Diego: Book Discussion: 'The Great Believers' By Rebecca Makkai

Mira Mesa Banned Book Club will host a book discussion of the 2019 One Book, One San Diego adult selection, “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai.

“The Great Believers” is a historical novel about the terrors and tragedies of the AIDS epidemic and its repercussions, through a story about friendship and redemption in the face of tragedy and loss, set in 1980s Chicago and contemporary Paris.


It won the Stonewall Book Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and was optioned by Amy Poehler for television.

Pam Stevens is a librarian, author, and active Mira Mesa community volunteer. She works at the University Community Branch of the San Diego Public Library in University City. Pam writes regularly for 'Mira Mesa Living', an online news magazine, and she is the author of "Mira Mesa, A Photo History of the Community". Since 2004 Pam has volunteered as the facilitator for the Mira Mesa Branch Library’s Banned Book Club, a monthly book group open to everyone who enjoys reading and talking about thought-provoking titles from all genres.

This event is part of the San Diego Public Library’s programming for this year’s One Book, One San Diego. The 2019 selections include “The Great Believers” by Rebecca Makkai, “The Crossover” by Kwame Alexander for young adults, "Dreamers" by Yuyi Morales for kids, and “Éramos unos niños” by Patti Smith for Spanish-language readers.
