"In the Absence of Things" is an experimental short film written and performed by renowned jazz-vocalist Somi in partnership with the National Black Theatre and Salon Africana. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, the work is a lyrical meditation on the profound sense of personal vacancy that a performer feels when unable to perform on stage or in front of an audience. The emotional vibration of cultural space in the absence of performance is captured on screen with vocals from Somi’s Grammy-award winning album Holy Room—Live at Alte Oper with Frankfurt Radio Big Band, along with her own spoken narrative and visuals. Somi’s mother even makes an appearance in the picture, a result of her choosing to shelter in place at home in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois at the onset of the pandemic.

The 15-minute work will be followed by a conversation between Somi and a special guest to be announced.
