  • WHERE Outdoor Stage At Arts District Liberty Station's South Promenade, 2850 Roosevelt Road, San Diego, CA 92106
  • AGES All ages
  • COST $25 - $30

Closing out the month-long "Dance is in the Air" Festival on Liberty Station's new outdoor stage, this annual show celebrates new works by four emerging choreographers: Luci Salinas, Kevin Truitt, Odessa Uno, and Stephanie Vasquez. These four were originally selected in the 2020 competition, which was scheduled for March 14, 2020. We all know how that weekend shook out. Judges will choose a winning choreographer and dancer, and the audience can vote for their favorite, too.

The first part of the show brings guest artists from other canceled shows throughout the pandemic, including Mayra Barragan, who won the competition in 2019. What I've seen of Barragan's work is powerful, disruptive and surprising.

Details: June 11-13, 2021. Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m., Sunday at 2:30 p.m. 2850 Roosevelt Road, Liberty Station. $25-30.

From the organizers:
San Diego Dance Theater is thrilled to bring back the Young Choreographers Showcase & Prize. This audience favorite has been an annual event for 10 years and features young and upcoming choreographic artistry. This year will showcase choreographers originally selected for the 2021 Young Choreographers Showcase & Prize that was cancelled due to COVID-19: Luci Salinas, Kevin Truitt, Odessa Uno, and Stephanie Vasquez. These finalists will present their work to a panel of qualified, diverse judges who will determine the awards of “Best Overall”, and “Best Dancer”, while the audience will have an opportunity to vote each night and choose the “Audience Favorite”.

Adding to the program and in the spirit of collaboration and support, San Diego Dance Theater has chosen to include invited guests: a soloist from the Teen Dance Fierce program Maya Allum created by San Diego Dance Theater’s Mario Jaimes, Mitchum Todd, Mayra Barragan, and H2O Dance Company, directed by Rebekah Brown.

Sure to be a delightful performance, the Young Choreographers + Invited Guests closes the run of the Dance is in the Air Festival, a collaboration with Malashock Dance and San Diego Ballet on an outdoor stage at Liberty Station.
