Haydn Voyages: Paths Converge

Hausmann Quartet — and their audience — finally return to the Berkeley ship at the Maritime Museum this Sunday for live, in-person performances in their Haydn Voyages series. If you can make it out to the show, they'll certainly make it worth your while with this packed program. There's five pieces: two by Haydn and three by some wildly varied contemporary composers, including a 1932 composition by Mexican modernist Silvestre Revueltas, "Musica de Feria," Aleksandra Vrebalov's forlorn and heavy 2015 work "My Desert, My Rose," and Kerwin Young's 2020 "Peace on the Left, Justice on the Right," written in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd. This will be a 90-minute, outdoor performance without an intermission. --Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS.

Paths Converge

*note the 3 p.m. time change. This 90-minute performance will take place without an intermission*
Two Haydn quartets bookend a trio of compact but powerfully adventurous works from the 20th and 21st centuries in the Hausmann Quartet’s long-awaited return to live, in person performance.

This concert will be held on the outdoor deck of the Berkeley, and features works by Silvestre Revueltas (the father of Mexican musical modernism), Aleksandra Vrebalov (My Desert, My Rose from 2015) and Kerwin Young’s brief but evocative Peace on the Left, Justice on the Right, written in response to the murder of George Floyd.

Audience members will once again be able to enjoy the idyllic sights and sounds of San Diego’s harbor as they experience live music.

Program:
Haydn – Quartet no. 17 in F Maj, Op. 17/2 (1771)
Silvestre Revueltas – Musica de Feria (1932)
Kerwin Young – Peace on the Left, Justice on the Right (2020)
Aleksandra Vrebalov – My Desert, My Rose (2015)
Haydn – Quartet No. 44 in E major, Op. 54/3 (1788)

Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime

The Hausmann Quartet and Maritime Museum of San Diego are excited to partner to present the sixth season of Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime, a quarterly concert series performed aboard one of the Museum’s ten historic world-class vessels, the 1898 steam ferryboat Berkeley that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay.

The 2021 season will open with a virtual presentation on February 28 (available for viewing through March 7), with the hope of resuming in person presentations on May 16, September 12 and November 21. All concerts are Sundays at 4 pm. For each in person performance refreshments will be available at the upper deck bar starting at 3 pm, as well as after each concert for a chance to mingle with performers and audience members!

Each creative program will also include informative and entertaining commentary between selections from noted UC Santa Barbara musicologist Derek Katz.
