If you keep your ears to the ground of today’s music, there’s a chance you’ve noticed it: the rich sonority of hundreds of reeds set in motion by hand-powered bellows. That’s right – accordions are making their voices heard!

Accordions almost disappeared from the landscape of popular music in the 1960s, but now – more than 50 years later – they seem to be popping up in more and more genres and styles. Is the accordion making a comeback?

"Accordions: Expanding Voices in the USA" presents a snapshot of the state of the accordion now, exploring the myriad ways that its aficionados are using it.

Leaving stereotypes in the dust, the exhibition includes recordings and stories from musicians playing the accordion in everything from classical and jazz to Norteño and punk.

The exhibition also features an exploded accordion that provides an uncommon glimpse at the instrument’s insides and historical examples illustrating the development of the accordion from its early roots through the modern instrument that was found in classrooms across the country in the 1950s.

Visitors will have the chance to make their own accordion music with interactive instruments—along with a how-to video to get started—in the gallery.
