Shakespeare can be intimidating or overwhelming. But the good news is that his writing is DESIGNED to be lived out. His words and rhythms are a map that, if followed, lead the performers on a dynamic, active journey. We are here to demystify and find our own personal connection to the words of Shakespeare.

The class will be structured around individual exploration of short monologues assigned by the teacher, based on each student's individual specs and needs. All monologues will be sourced from Shakespeare's As You Like It, as it provides a wide range of active monologues. Each student will read the play in preparation for the class, and to get a sense of the action of the play. The six weeks will be structured as follows:

First Week:
• A quick review of the play: it's plot, themes, characters and context.
• Diving into the meter: Going over iambic pentameter, and explaining how to break down Shakespearean language. • Assigning monologues
Second Week through Fourth Week:
• In-class presentation of monologues and feedback.
• The goal will be for each student to specify and activate the language further and further throughout the weeks. Emphasis will be on helping the student find the rhythm of the text, while also crafting the arc of the piece and working to hone their choices and performance.
Fifth Week:
• Final work session!
• The class will culminate in the students performing their pieces in a zoom showcase for family and friends.
