Neil Kendricks: Mirror Mirror: Lights, Camera, Dreams opening reception:
May 8, 2021 from 5-8 p.m.

From the artist:
French philosopher and writer Jean-Paul Sartre once described cinema as the “frenzy on the wall.” He was right. However, indie films can also be homemade and personal. They can be raw and deliberately ambiguous; a wailing wall of ideas smuggled inside the Trojan Horse of dream-like images. Think of these works as the eye of an image-rich hurricane raging with stories, large and small.

Mirror, Mirror: Lights, Camera, Dreams is my private storm system of experimental short films and video art intoxicated with happy accidents and scripted mayhem. These cinematic works embrace their small triumphs and flaws as growing pains. Each project was a critical step forward on my quest while simultaneously corralling other creatives to join my merry band of cinematic magicians. Together, we made visual music from illusions. We delighted in singing off key. And we marched and danced to the heartbeat of a different drummer. My visual songs play on.

This short-film exhibition of moving and still images is dedicated to the loving memory of my beloved father Willie James Kendricks (1941 -2018) who taught me everything I know. As a lifelong film buff, my Dad opened my eyes and heart to the never-ending awe of movie alchemy with much love and encouragement. His spirit lives in me now and always. - Neil Kendricks
