The Athenaeum Art Center in Logan Heights just opened an exhibition of works by graphic designer and bookmaker Susan Merritt. These are all wood-type prints, broadsides and unique books she made during a residency 18 years ago at the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum in Wisconsin. As far as wood type and printing museums are concerned, this one is iconic. I've been really impressed with the AAC's commitment to printmaking in all its forms, and this is a great continuation of their work.

Merritt will be onsite in residence during the exhibition's run, and will also be "overprinting" directly on top of some of the original pieces.

Details: On view through June 29 by appointment or during gallery hours (10-4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday). 1955 Julian Ave., Logan Heights. Free. --Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS

PRESS ON: Explorations in Wood Type by Susan Merritt
An art exhibition at the Athenaeum Art Center in Logan Heights (Main Gallery)

"Press On" features experimental wood-type prints, typographic broadsides, and one-of-a-kind books produced by graphic designer and book artist Susan Merritt during a one-month residency in 2003 at the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, which claims the world’s largest collection of wood type and largest individual sorts. The exhibition brings Merritt back to the printing press. In support of the Print Studio’s mission to keep printmaking and letterpress alive, Merritt will be in residence at the Studio over the course of the exhibition. Using wood and lead type, dingbats, and ad cuts found in the Studio’s type cases, Merritt plans to expand on individual works represented in the exhibition by overprinting directly on pieces that she printed at Hamilton almost eighteen years ago, thereby forging past and present into one impression.

"Press On" runs from Tuesday, April 6, through Tuesday, June 29, at the Athenaeum School of the Arts Print Studio in Logan Heights.

Hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and by appointment. For appointments, contact the Athenaeum at (619) 269-1981 or info@ljathenaeum.org.

Dates and times of events are subject to change without notice. Always check the event organizer's website for the most updated schedule before attending. Check local COVID-19 restrictions and updates.
