San Diego Nonprofit One Digital World celebrates GivingTuesday with a virtual hike-a-thon to support refugee education.

One Digital World is responding to meet the needs of refugees seeking asylum in the United States by organizing a virtual hike-a-thon fundraiser to build a computer lab classroom.

ODW needs to raise $5,000 for classroom materials, IT equipment, and a computer lab coordinator. Those who are interested in joining ODW’s Virtual Hike-a-thon can visit https://bit.ly/35APLKc to learn more, register as a hiker or pledge support for every mile trekked by active teams now through Dec. 1.

The ODW Hike-a-thon for Refugee Education takes place from Nov. 1 - Dec. 1. We need you to create a fundraising team and record your hiking and walking miles throughout November or sponsor a hiking team by pledging a financial sponsorship per mile traveled.

As the pandemic rages on, so does the humanitarian crisis along the US-Mexico border. Over 9,000 asylum-seekers live uncertain lives as they seek safety and protection in immigration court.

Local nonprofit, One Digital World, uses technology and virtual resources to empower men, women, and children who have fled gang violence and political persecution in Central America to have skills and education that will prepare them to be successful and self-reliant once they are granted asylum and relocated to San Diego and the United States.

“Casey was my first ever teacher. These classes gave me my first opportunity to sit at a computer. Before this, I had never even gone to school. I’ve learned typing skills, English skills, what the internet is and what it can do” -Amal (Saudi Arabia)

“My best class memory is when Casey asked me to become the class translator. One Digital World values us. They are helping us to be useful to society and not to be jobless and illiterate” -Sara (Afghanistan)

One Digital World has been on the frontline of the refugee crisis. Last year, ODW founder Casey Myers headed to Europe to pilot her digital literacy curriculum designed for the needs of refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, and Africa. They took to the course with enthusiasm, learning how to touch-type, access information online, create resumes and even build basic computers.

At this computer lab classroom ODW will coordinate virtual skill building courses to earn certificates and degrees online from world-class universities and companies and provide access to virtual legal services. For more information, visit www.onedigitalworld.net
